Petronas Hits Milestone in Suriname’s Oil Exploration
In an impressive move within the offshore oil sector, Petronas has successfully completed drilling the Caiman-1 exploration well as part of its ambitious initiative in Block 52 off the coast of Suriname. This achievements marks the inaugural well in a broader four-well drilling endeavor scheduled for the 2025-2026 period. With this effort, Suriname is making significant strides towards converting its offshore discoveries into viable commercial undertakings.
The Caiman-1 well, which was spudded on July 21, 2025, and safely plugged and abandoned by December 6, 2025, has yielded encouraging results. These findings are set to play a critical role in subsequent appraisal and development concept studies for Block 52, thus reinforcing Suriname’s burgeoning oil ambitions.
Strategically located in the western part of Block 52, this offshore region encompasses approximately 4,750 square kilometers with water depths reaching between 60 and 1,000 meters. Situated roughly 140 kilometers offshore, Block 52 lies within the rapidly evolving Guyana-Suriname Basin, a hotspot that has attracted increasing interest from international oil companies following a wave of recent discoveries in the area.
The drilling operations were conducted with robust local support, using materials, fuel, and provisions sourced from Paramaribo. This approach not only bolstered local participation but also fostered new business opportunities for Suriname’s domestic suppliers and service companies.
Block 52 is pivotal in Suriname’s efforts to replicate the exploration triumphs seen in neighboring Guyana. Beyond Petronas’ involvement, the national oil company Staatsolie is actively working to broaden its offshore portfolio through collaborations with global operators. Notably, in a separate venture at Block 61, Staatsolie secured a production-sharing agreement with Cairn Energy back in 2018, which mandated seismic surveys and future exploration drilling on the Demerara Plateau.
With Caiman-1 now concluded and further wells on the horizon, the Block 52 campaign led by Petronas is on a trajectory that could transform Suriname’s oil landscape. This development could potentially elevate the country from merely an exploration success story to a commercially sustainable offshore oil player, thereby reshaping its long-term energy strategy and economic framework.
