Commissioner Albuquerque Hosts Inaugural Meeting of Financial Literacy Ambassadors
On March 16, 2026, Maria Luís Albuquerque, the European Commissioner for Financial Services and the Savings and Investments Union, convened the first virtual assembly of national financial literacy ambassadors. These ambassadors, designated by Member States, are tasked with a significant role in bolstering and advocating for financial literacy initiatives at both national and European Union levels. Their engagement with citizens and communities will involve various methods, including media outreach and participation in public events. Furthermore, they will be instrumental in directing citizens towards trustworthy financial literacy programs, resources, and pertinent contacts through public outreach.
The enhancement of financial literacy is a key priority for this current European Commission. By elevating the levels of financial literacy among citizens, individuals can gain the confidence needed to handle their personal finances more adeptly. This empowerment allows them to create effective budgets, recognize scams and fraudulent schemes, sidestep over-indebtedness, increase their savings effectively, and make informed investment decisions.
This meeting is a pivotal moment in realizing the Commission’s financial literacy strategy, which was adopted on September 30, 2025. This comprehensive strategy includes a commitment to launch a wide-ranging EU campaign aimed at increasing awareness about financial literacy, complementing and enhancing national efforts. A core element of this campaign is the establishment of a network comprising national financial literacy ambassadors.
The timing of this meeting aligns with the commencement of Global Money Week (GMW), an annual global initiative organized by the OECD International Network on Financial Education (OECD/INFE) that focuses on educating youth about financial literacy and responsible money management. The 14th edition of GMW is set to unfold from March 16 to March 22, 2026, themed ‘Smart Money Talks’.
A comprehensive list of the appointed financial literacy ambassadors is available for public reference, highlighting the importance of their roles in advancing financial education across Europe.
This initiative is managed by the Directorate-General for Financial Stability, Financial Services and Capital Markets Union, aiming to ensure a secure and informative financial environment for the citizens of the European Union.
