UBS CEO Sergio Ermotti Expected to Step Down in 2027 – Report

Sergio Ermotti, the chief executive of UBS, is reportedly set to depart from his position in April 2027. This information has been relayed by the Financial Times, citing knowledgeable sources. Ermotti’s tenure resumed in 2023 amidst UBS’s acquisition of Credit Suisse, for which he is spearheading the crucial integration phase between the two financial institutions.

Ermotti’s imminent departure coincides with ongoing discussions with Swiss authorities regarding stricter capital requirements for UBS. These talks have sparked speculation about the possible relocation of the bank’s headquarters outside Switzerland, raising concerns over its operational feasibility amidst heightened regulations.

Chairman Colm Kelleher brought back Ermotti to guide the company after a nine-year stint as CEO, during which he successfully navigated UBS through turbulent financial waters. The search for a successor is projected to gain momentum as UBS prepares for its annual general meeting next year.

Among candidates for the top position, potential successors include Aleksandar Ivanovic, who has headed asset management since joining the group executive board in March 2024. Other names in the internal pool are Iqbal Khan and Robert Karofsky, both co-presidents of wealth management, alongside Bea Martin, who stepped up as chief operating officer in 2025 after managing the winding down of non-essential Credit Suisse assets.

Insiders caution that Ermotti’s official exit date is not yet etched in stone and may be subject to change. Upon returning to UBS, Ermotti had pledged to stay for a period of three to five years to oversee the integration and nurture future leadership from within the bank.

This integration process has not been devoid of challenges, as it entails addressing regulatory and legal issues stemming from Credit Suisse’s legacy. In a notable turnaround, UBS’s share price has significantly increased, effectively doubling during Ermotti’s leadership.

However, tensions have arisen with Swiss regulators, primarily concerning proposals that could necessitate an additional capital buffer of approximately $24 billion, a move UBS argues could undermine its operational integrity. The decisions regarding these reforms are keenly awaited, particularly before Ermotti’s anticipated departure.

Chairman Kelleher is making strides in succession planning, hoping to replicate the internal transition approach that recently unfolded at Morgan Stanley, which involved a shortlist of internal candidates. Iqbal Khan, a prominent figure since moving from Credit Suisse amid controversy, frequently emerges as a favored successor, especially given his strategic placements across different divisions, including a recent assignment in Hong Kong.

Reflecting on his future plans, Ermotti has hinted at the possibility of a return to a chairmanship role should circumstances align post-departure. In 2024, he also indicated a possible exit timeline at either the year’s conclusion or early 2027, further heightening the urgency around leadership continuity at UBS.

For his efforts, Ermotti has been handsomely rewarded, amassing SFr14.9 million ($18.7 million) in compensation for 2024, making him one of Europe’s highest-paid banking executives. Following reports about potential job cuts linked to the integration challenges, responses from UBS regarding Ermotti’s succession and timeline remain unconfirmed.
